  2008 in review: WHO 60th Anniversary 

   

   

  In 2008, the World Health Organization had a double celebration: its 60th anniversary and the 30th birthday of the Declaration of Alma-Ata on Primary Health Care, signed in 1978.

  The World Health Report of 2008 was called “Primary Health Care: Now More Than Ever” and settled  4 “avenues” to be crossed in order to globalize and develop qualified and sustainable health systems: universal coverage reforms, service delivery reforms, public policy reforms and leadership reforms. 

  

   

  After such an important year as this, WHO has published a photo essay with the key public health issues to remark and to keep fostering the global consciousness regarding healthcare inequalities.

  HouseDoc 

  

  Email communication with patients should be as safe as possible. Using a personal mail account may not be the best way to send clinical content to your doctor. It’s pretty recomendable to use encrypted and HIPPA compliant email services.

  HouseDoc is one of them. Could be interesting to get a list of all the different email services available nowadays. I’ll try to collect and post them here.

  Medical Twitterers 

  

  I’ve been using Twitter for a couple of weeks now, and I can assure you that it has been a breathtaking experience. Twitter is a microblogging service that allows you to send and receive short posts, called tweets, limited to 140 characters. These tweets are displayed on the users profile page and also sent to the followers of that specific user.

  These are my reasons to Twitter:

  1. keeping in touch with the most recent news in Health 2.0

  2. receiving links to new blog posts from people I’m following

  3. spreading new ideas and discoveries to a wide community of GPs, physicians and eHealth entrepreneurs

  4. reading twitterviews (e.g. read from bottom to top: Berci Mesko being twitterviewed by DiarioMedico.com yesterday)

  5. following Lance Armstrong on his daily practicing, Shaquille Oneal or even Monty Phyton’s  John Cleese 

  6. having clinical questions to be answered in a snap 

  7. accompanying patients thoughts and achievments, eg. DiabetesMine 

   

  This is definitely a powerful tool for enabling global communication and knowledge sharing.

  eCounselling 

  

  One year ago, I met Yonah Yaphe, an israelite GP, on the 25th Encontro Nacional de Clinica Geral (an annual national meeting of GPs that occurs on sunny Vilamoura, in Algarve – Portugal). At that time, I was really glad to meet him, since he has become a very experienced eCounselor. eCounselling has been a significant part of his daily work has a GP, since 4 years.

  eCounselling should definitely be a part of the GP Curriculum, since we already are in need to know the techniques and difficulties that electronic counselling encompasses.

  I asked Yonah Yaphe to allow me to post here one of his presentations, that was available on the First Virtual Congress of GP/FM.

  I hope you enjoy it as much has I did. He is the first virtual GP I’ve met.

  SMSmokers 

  

  Imagine you receive a SMS on your cellular phone asking if you are a smoker… Would you answer it and consequently warn your GP? 

  Apparently, identifying patients that are smokers by short messaging service is significantly more efective than the previous notification methods.

  This is what iPlato, a company dedicated to mobile health promotion, just recently demonstrated in the Brook Green Medical Centre (Hammersmith and Fulham, London) were 49% of the patients that received a text-message replied to it. The patients were able to answer by text-messaging and then the GP received the notification by email.
